Serving School Districts

Residencies

A Partnership for Success

The residency model is a district-serving teacher preparation program that pairs a rigorous full-year classroom apprenticeship with master's-level education content. This model provides residents with the theory of effective teaching and 1,200 hours of student teaching alongside an effective and trained mentor teacher.

Residents are employed by the district partners and receive stipends and health benefits as they learn to teach, and then commit to teaching in their districts for 3 or more years. Upon finishing the program, they earn a teaching license and master's degree.

Why Residencies?

  • Recruit, prepare and retain effective teachers who share similar life experiences as their students.
  • Diversify the teacher workforce by breaking down barriers and interrupting systems to the teaching profession
  • Prepare highly effective teachers and increase teacher retention.
  • Increase academic achievement and educational opportunities for all students
  • Inform and improve teacher preparation practices and partnerships and be part of a model for school-university partnerships that enhances the ability of schools and universities to continually improve their cultural relevance while addressing racial disparities

Charter School Residency Program

Our Charter School Residency Program is a non-conventional teacher preparation pathway designed to meet the high-needs teaching areas in Minnesota charter schools. In collaboration with a consortium of charter school partners, this program strives to prepare and retain high-quality licensed educators, including teachers from underrepresented communities to increase student achievement. Our current charter residency is partially funded through a federal Teacher Quality Partnership grant.
